Mark has been with the University for over 25 years in a variety of administrative and management capacities, including stints in the Department of Medicine Finance Office, as MSO of General Internal Medicine, and as Business Director for the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. He has a background in business from both USC (fight on!) and UCLA Anderson. He is currently Chair of the UCLA AMP chapter and Chair Elect of the UC Systemwide AMP. Chair-ElectLeah KahnUC Santa CruzLeah is a Curriculum Analyst within, and supervisor of Instructional Support Services for Jack Baskin School of Engineering. She is a very proud “slug”, having earned her Bachelor’s degree in Feminist Studies and Spanish from UCSC, and now as a staff member. She became an AMP member at her campus chapter in 2018, and is very excited to now be serving on her local Executive Board, as well as on the systemwide Steering Committee. Serving on AMP has provided her with wonderful opportunities to meet and collaborate with outstanding colleagues from greater UCSC campus, as well as from across the state. Past-ChairMillo PasquiniUC San FranciscoMillo Mau Pasquini is the Business Services Manager for Campus HR at UCSF. She works closely with HR Directors and the Finance Services Center to oversee the budget, and has an excellent team that keeps operations running smoothly. She spent 12 years in Basic Sciences before joining her current role in central campus. She is honored and thrilled to serve as the System-wide Chair for the Riverside conference collaborating with staff across the system. She has been a member of UCSF AMP since 2007 serving in different committees and developing programs and events. She enjoys cheering for her home sports teams and her children’s sports games when she is away from the office. TreasurerYvette Obando UC San DiegoYvette is the Chief Administrative Officer of Urban Studies and Planning at UC San Diego. With 20 years of experience working at UCSD, Yvette brings a plenitude of knowledge in contract and grants with a focus on academic administration and departmental management. Along with her extensive background in management, Yvette interfaces with various training committees and is currently the Division of Social Sciences (DSS) Summer Session Representative, a DSS Enterprise Systems Renewal (ESR) Divisional Lead, and a Financial Information Systems Change Network Lead. Yvette has been collaborating with UC AMP for 2 years as Treasurer and enjoys being part of a UC System-Wide committee. Yvette graduated from UC, Los Angeles, with a Bachelor Degree in Psychology. SecretaryApril MeinzerUC Riverside Historian Shanley Miller,UC San DiegoShanley is currently the MSO for three academic units at UCSD; Department of Sociology, Latin American Studies Program and African and African-American Studies Research Center. She works with an excellent staff to manage all aspects of the units including student affairs, facilities, academic personnel and fiscal operations. Future goals include finally convincing Facilities Management to install zip lines between buildings on campus. Committee Members UC Berkeley Andrew ParkUC BerkeleyAndrew is the department manager for the Physical Education Program in UC Berkeley’s Bio-Sciences division. He oversees over 100 physical activity and lecture-based wellness/fitness/health courses serving 3000 students each semester. Andrew was raised in Oakland where he is heavily invested in community based organizations and initiatives. Garcia is a Chief Administrative Officer in the College of Letters and Science at UC Davis. He has been at UC Davis for 21 years and has served in his current role for the last 6 years. He is excited to join the UC AMP Committee and looks forward to helping with bringing together staff from across the UC system. Karen OstergardUC DavisKaren Ostergard is the Chief Administrative Officer for the Arts departments at UC Davis. She manages all things budget, HR and space for the Arts departments, the rules and policy person amongst amazing creative passion. She has been at UC Davis for more than 30 years and is looking forward to retirement in a few years when she will spend more time on her own creative pursuits! UC Irvine Lorrie AguirreUC IrvineLorrie is the MSO for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) in the Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine. Lorrie has decades of successful management, financial accounting, IT, human resources, marketing, business and leadership experience. Her bachelor’s degree is in Organizational Leadership which has equipped her with decision-making, communication, conflict and change management, team building and development skills. Lorrie has been with UCI since 2001, prior to her employment at UCI, Lorrie managed the corporate accounting office for a national franchise of automotive service stations in 19 states and provided oversight of information technology systems used in the business office. Bessy J. VarelaUC IrvineBessy J. Varela is the Department Administrator for Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, in the School of Biological Sciences at UC Irvine. Bessy has been a UC employee for over 22 years. She received her Bachelor’s degree from UC Santa Barbara, and it was there that she also started her UC career as an Administrative Assistant. She has been at UC Irvine since 1999 and has worked in various administrative roles. UCLA Nancy VelasquezUCLAChief Administrative Officer at the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment, which is part of the Social Sciences division under the College of Letters and Science. Nancy has worked at UCLA over 20 years, in various administrative roles from Fund Management, Operations, Finance, and Management. She has been involved with AMG for several years, and enjoys collaborating with members to achieve opportunities for professional growth and development. As a lifelong learner, she has a strong belief in professional development, along with mentoring others to strive for a greater success. Nancy finds her balance with inspirational reading, strength training, and HIIT fitness. Betsy LinaresAssociate Director of Student Life for MBA Student Affairs DepartmentUCLABetsy currently serves as an Associate Director of Student Life for MBA Student Affairs Department at the Anderson School of Management. She is passionate about helping others advance their careers and her current role enables her to actively help students, staff, and faculty. Having been the first to graduate from college (Go Bruins!), Betsy has had to push herself to learn how to navigate her professional career. Betsy thrives in bringing people together and helping others learn more about how each person can develop both personally and professionally and hopes to impact staff all across the UCLA community by giving back to the community that has helped her make professional strides. She loves spending time with her close family and friends and enjoys reading and doing outdoor activities such as hiking. She then joined HSRI in September 2014 in a duo role as the Management Services Officer (MSO) and Grants Post-Award Manager. As department MSO, Leann oversees and approves all transactions and manages the operational budgets, as well as supervises the academic and Human Resource personnel hiring’s. Prior to coming to UC Merced, Leann worked for a non-profit agency as an Accountant II managing grants that support vocational programs, as well as assisting with internal audits.Leann has led the Post-Award team in HSRI starting with 15 awards to now managing over 60 awards from funders including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Public Health, Cancer Research Coordinating Committee, Department of Army Research, Airforce Research, as well as the Medical Education Program. Leann and her post-award team has established an excellent working relationship with faculty in providing them with the customer service and administrative support to alleviate as much of the administration burden so that the Principal Investigators can strictly focus on their research.She has received certificates of completion in Financial Management through the Society of Research Administrators International, Supervisory Certificate Program at UC Merced, Risk Management, and received the Staff Award of Excellence in Customer Service and Job Performance in 2018. Leann holds a degree in Accounting and Business Management which lead her to a career in the Governmental Accounting field, and now Research Administration. She has been with the University since June 2012 and is a graduate of the CSU system. Maryam FarshadDirector of Research AdministrationDepartment of Orthopaedic SurgeryUC San FranciscoBay area native. Have been at UCSF since 2014. Went to grad school at Golden Gate University, graduated with an MPA degree. Have been working in the public sector for over 15 years. Enjoy hanging out with family, being outdoors, cooking and gardening. UC Santa Barbara Boris W. PalenciaUC Santa BarbaraAfter completing a tour in Iraq with the Marine Corps, Boris studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara. While there, he became the President of the Student Veteran Organization, which received two awards for their veteran advocacy: The UC President’s Award for Outstanding Student Organization and UCSB’s Leslie Griffin Lawson Outstanding President Leadership Award. He received a B.A. in Economics and Accounting as part of the first graduating class from the Economics department. After graduating from UCSB, Boris began a career as an accountant, quickly working his way up within the Extramural Funds Department at his alma mater. He is currently the Business Officer at the UCSB Admissions department, a volunteer with the Dream Foundation and a Rotaract member. Boris also holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the Pepperdine Graziadio School of Business and lives with his wife and son in Santa Barbara, CA. M. Alex RaddeAssistant Dean College Administrative OfficerCollege of Letters & ScienceUC Santa BarbaraA graduate of UC Santa Barbara, Alex began his career at UC Santa Barbara in 2008 after completing his undergraduate studies. Alex has worked in many different areas of University administration from organized research to managing academic departments including the Environmental Studies Program and the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability. He is currently Assistant Dean, College Administrative Officer, for the College of Letters & Science. His experience ranges from project management, development & training, financial administration, and is Lean Six Sigma certified. Alex is an avid triathlete and marathon runner. He has completed 7 marathons, countless triathlons, and has competed in the Vineman 70.3 Ironman in Santa Rosa, CA. He lives in Santa Barbara, CA with his partner, Hugh, and their portuguese water dog, Bogie. Amber was welcomed to the engineering division as of October 2019, though she joined the UC Santa Cruz community as a proposal analyst in 2016. Her experience before UC Santa Cruz includes ten years of experience coordinating and managing social services administration, programs, and events. The things that excite Amber about her ongoing work at UC Santa Cruz are continuing to learn, serving fellow staff through community-building activities, streamlining administrative services, and contributing to an inclusive, vibrant, and friendly community. Outside of work, Amber enjoys mountain biking, building models, and reading a wide range of fiction.
